Pere Garau is a district of Palma which is located in the northeast of the town center. Although it is only a 15-minute walk from the city center (Plaza Mayor), hardly any tourists are seen in this area. Although there are no impressive monuments or beautiful buildings, this district has its own authentic charm.
The Mercat Pere Garau is one of the most traditional market to visit in Palma. Prices are much cheaper than at the Mercat Olivar or Mercat Santa Catalina. In the middle of the market square, there is a market hall that is open Monday to Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to around 3:00 p.m.
On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays it is busier, as stalls are set up outside the market hall. The atmosphere here is fantastic: customers crowd around the stalls, the market traders tout their wares and the scent of fresh herbs fills the air. At the outdoor stalls there is a variety of vegetables and fruit, as well as flowers and plants for home and gardens. Most stalls offer local products from Mallorca. There are various fruit and vegetable stalls and also a large selection of meat and fish, some bakeries, and some stalls with wine and local delicacies. There are also tapas bars and even a sushi stall, in Pere Garau.
And if you love the sea, you are not far from the Paseo Maritimo and the Playa de Palma at the port of Portixol.
